Q: I’ve got my results and they're worse than I expected. I’m worried! What can I do now?
A: Don’t panic! Think positive! You can still discuss your options with your parents or carer, teachers or with your Connexions Personal Adviser.
To talk to someone about local courses, Apprenticeships or Entry to Employment (e2e) phone 0800 0938 351 or email mychoice@cnxnotts.co.uk (Adviser available: 10am - 4pm Monday to Friday)
Q: What are my options after Year 11?
A:
- Re-sits – these can be very useful, especially if your English or maths results are not as good as you’d expected.
- Study new subjects
- Maybe you wish you'd chosen different subjects in Year 9
- You may find some really interesting courses that you’ve never thought of doing before.
- Ask your Connexions Personal Adviser to help you find local courses or go to MychoiceNotts.com .
- Work-related learning – there are many qualifications at different levels that prepare you for jobs such as leisure and tourism, engineering or construction.
- Apprenticeships
- Apprenticeships and other training programmes are done mainly at work and partly at college or a training centre.
- You’ll be learning how to do a job such as dental technician or administrator.
- You’ll be paid a wage.
- (e2e) will help you improve your basic and key skills.
- It will help you achieve NVQ Level 1.
- You’ll gain work experience.
- You may be entitled to EMA.
-Work or work with training
- Think! You are much more likely to get a good job if you have a level 3 qualification (A levels, NVQs, Apprenticeships or similar). Three quarters of jobs in Nottingham are looking for this level.
- A job with training means you are more likely to earn better money in the long run.
- Our Vacancies Online website can provide you with lots of information on getting a job - you can even apply for some jobs online too!
Q: Do I have to stay on at school or can I study elsewhere?
A: You don't have to stay on at school. You can choose from the following…
- School sixth form
- Sixth form college
- College of further education
- Other colleges – for example drama schools or colleges where you study farming, agriculture or forestry.
Q: Can I get help with money?
A: Yes, you may be able to get Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) which is a weekly allowance you could receive depending on your family’s income. You need to stay on at school, go to college full-time, do e2e or PLP. Ask your Connexions Personal Adviser or school for an application form.
