What Next 11-13: In Years 8 and 9

What you choose to do in Year 9 could shape the rest of your life. To help you make these important decisions talk to your Personal Adviser and teachers about your plans for the future.

Here are some tips on choosing your GCSE and other qualifications...

When you choose your GCSE or other qualifications think about:

  • The jobs you might want to do in the future and what subjects they might require

  • Which subjects you enjoy

  • Which subjects you're good at

  • The subjects on offer that you haven't done before

  • Building upon your strengths and skills

Which subjects?

  • Some subjects you have to do, others you can choose from.
  • Make sure you research your options properly.

Who can help me choose?

You don't have to make these decisions on your own! Any of these people can help you make your mind up:

  • Careers Co-ordinator

  • Connexions Personal Adviser
  • Form tutor
  • Subject teachers
  • Head of year

Top tips

  • Check out all of your options before making your decision - you never know...

  • Find out which subjects you'll need to study for the careers you're interested in.
  • Choose for yourself, not what your mates are doing - you don't want to be stuck with a subject you don't like.
  • Visit your school Connexions library and ask the librarian to help you look for the right books and websites.
  • Don't choose a subject just because you like the teacher - you might be doing the wrong course for your future career.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help.
  • Be daring! Don't think about 'boys subjects' and 'girls subjects' - all courses are open to you.
