Chlamydia and Chlamydia Tests
Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK today. About 1 in 10 sexually active people tested have chlamydia, yet most people who have it do not have any signs or symptoms and will not know they’ve got it.
If chlamydia isn’t treated, the infection can spread to other parts of the body causing damage and serious long-term complications. In women it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This can lead to long-term pelvic pain, blocked fallopian tubes, infertility and ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that occurs outside the womb). In men, chlamydia can lead to a painful infection in the testicles and possible reduced fertility.
A simple test will show if you have it – the treatment is simple, effective and free. The test is available from Nottingham Connexions, the Victoria Health Centre Clinic, young peoples outreach clinics, Base 51, the NHS Walk-In-Centre and Ante-natal areas.
The test which is for males and females under 25 is a simple urine sample, or for women it can be a self-taken vaginal swab. If Chlamydia is detected it can be easily treated with antibiotics. Recent sexual partners will also need to be treated.
Your completed sample with your preferred method of contact must be taken to either Victoria Health Centre or The Health Shop. All visits and information will be treated in complete confidence. The results should be available within 2 weeks. You will be contacted by the method you preferred. However, if you are concerned or do not hear from Victoria Health Centre, then contact them on 0115 9715185.
