Chat rooms and forums can be fun and a great way to talk to new people. But it’s important to remember that if you haven’t actually met them, your chat room friends are strangers. They may be lying about who they really are.

- If you want to meet someone you’ve been talking to online, take a parent or carer along with you for the first meeting.
- Don’t give out any personal information such as name, address, mobile or telephone number, school name or photos. This includes your profile for social networking sites. Use a nickname and cartoon instead of a photo.
- Learn how to keep a copy of conversations.
- If you feel that something isn’t quite right tell your parent or carer.
