You and the police

Rounded corner
If you're stopped by the police do you know what your rights are?

  • the police can search you or your bag (or your car) if they have 'reasonable grounds for suspecting' they will find a knife, stolen goods or drugs etc.
  • Strip searches can only take place where you cannot be seen and by an officer of the same sex.  If your under 17 you must have a parent or carer present.
  • You don't have a complete right to silence - this will be explained to you if you're cautioned.
  • You have the right to speak to a solicitor free of charge before you agree to be interviewed by the police.
  • If you think you've been treated unfairly you can complain about a particular police officer
