You and the police

If you're stopped by the police do you know what your rights are?

the police can search you or your bag (or your car) if they have 'reasonable grounds for suspecting' they will find a knife, stolen goods or drugs etc.
Strip searches can only take place where you cannot be seen and by an officer of the same sex. If your under 17 you must have a parent or carer present.
You don't have a complete right to silence - this will be explained to you if you're cautioned.
You have the right to speak to a solicitor free of charge before you agree to be interviewed by the police.
If you think you've been treated unfairly you can complain about a particular police officer
