'Don't Hide it' Campaign
The NSPCC says ‘Don’t Hide It’ to young people
The NSPCC has launched a four-week campaign called Don’t Hide It encouraging children and young people to speak out about abuse, including physical, emotional and sexual abuse, as well as domestic violence and bullying.
Nine out of ten children have a warm and loving background, but significant minorities suffer serious abuse or neglect at home. While abuse is predominately a family affair, large numbers of children suffer bullying, discrimination and violence from people they know outside the family. Most will keep their abuse secret. The ‘Don't hide it’ initiative shows that there are friends, parents, ChildLine and others who can help stop it – FULL STOP.
Young People like you can access a dedicated NSPCC website www.donthideit.com. There, there is a confidential and anonymous space to learn what abuse is and how to stop it. New NSPCC adverts will use creative images to show how children often hide their abuse and tell them: ‘You don’t have to hide it anymore’.
Visitors to www.donthideit.com, can design and show off their own animated web badges on teen social networking sites like Bebo and Piczo.
The interactive online badges will allow young people to show their support for the NSPCC’s initiative by incorporating key phrases such as “Don’t Hide It” and “Speak Out” with their favourite colours and a choice of funky designs.
Further advice is available via ChildLine, a free, confidential 24-hour helpline for children and young people where trained volunteer counsellors comfort, advise and protect children and young people. The ChildLine service, now one of the NSPCC’s listening services, still has the same well known telephone number – 0800 1111 – which can be accessed 24 hours a day.
