Looked after children and leaving care

Connexions can help you, if you are:

  • living with foster carers…
  • living in a community home or other specialist placement…
  • waiting to be adopted…

We realise that life may not be easy for you and may sometimes need extra help.

Your Connexions Personal Adviser (PA)

If you’re still at school then your PA will be the Connexions Personal Adviser working in your school. You may move schools, in which case your PA will be the person working in your new school. If you don’t have a place at school or you’ve left school contact your nearest Connexions centre. They will tell you who your PA is. Usually your PA will be working in the area you live in. You can also register at a different Connexions centre if it’s easier for you to get to. If you have good reason you can change your Personal Adviser.

How your PA can help

Your PA will see you at least three times a year. This will usually be in school. If you’re not attending school or are over 16 your PA could see you at home, in a Connexions Centre or in a convenient public place. This could be on a one-to-one basis, a group session or a Social Care review. You and your PA will work out how they can help you.

Your Personal Adviser should be invited to Social Care and Education reviews. Usually your PA will see you before the meeting to find out what you want to discuss and how your PA can best support you.

What happens when you leave care?

You’ll have a PA who specialises in helping care leavers. This new Leaving Care Personal Adviser will be able to work with you until you are 21.If you go on to higher education they’ll support you until you’re 24.
