Driving lessons
When driving as a learner you must display L plates and be supervised by someone who is at least 21 years of age and has held a licence for that type of car for at least three years, and still holds one. The Driving Standards Agency recommends that you take lessons with an approved driving instructor.
Theory test
You need to pass the theory test before you can book a driving or motorcycle-riding test!
Driving test
When you have passed your theory test you have 2 years in which to pass the driving test, without having to re-take it. For further information contact the Driving Standards Agency or your local Driving Test Centre.
Licence
At 16 years of age you can apply for a provisional licence for mopeds, and at 17 for cars and motorcycles. To apply for a provisional licence you will need to get a form from your local post office and then send it off to the DVLA.
MOT
Three years from the date of registration (and ever year after that) a motorcycle or car, must pass an MOT. You must not drive a car (if over three years old) without a valid MOT certificate as this is illegal and may invalidate your car insurance.
Insurance
When on the road, you must have a valid insurance certificate covering you for at least third party liability. You must not drive a vehicle without valid insurance, as you will not be covered in the event of an accident. Before driving any vehicle make sure that it is covered. You can get a quotation for insurance from any agent or broker, look in the Yellow Pages!
