Engineering (general) - Nottinghamshire info
The engineering industry in Nottinghamshire has been badly affected by the national decline of the sector. Many large firms which were well known in the county aren't here anymore and between 2004 and 2014 the number of people employed in the sector is expected to drop by around 2,000.
Although there are fewer people employed in engineering in Nottinghamshire, because of new technology and new production methods, we are producing more. But there's still a need for skilled people. Employers are finding it hard to fill vacancies because applicants either don't have the right work experience, skills or qualifications. Most of the hard-to-fill vacancies are for:
- Technicians
- Professional engineers
- Operators and assemblers
Workers in Engineering in Nottinghamshire:
There's a wide range of areas within engineering including electrical, maintenance, design, fabrication and welding.
- For example, over 19,406 people work in engineering manufacturing alone (2)
- Around 1 in 6 (16%) of workers in engineering as a whole are female (3).
The number of females employed in engineering in general across the UK is expected to grow by 9% between 2004 and 2014. For the East Midlands there could be 12% more women working in the sector but for Nottinghamshire it looks like there will be a drop of 3% - come on girls!
