Four one pound pieces

Most jobs in the finance industry are based in an office, some will involve travel and some will involve working long hours.  You might be working in a bank or building society either behind the scenes or dealing with customers or you might be advising people about financial products over the phone.  You need to be careful and pay attention to detail - an extra 'zero' could have serious consequences!

Independent financial advisers have an important role as they provide unbiased advice to consumers, businesses and the government about financial products and trends.  They are more likely to be self-employed than other roles in this sector.

There are many chances to gain more qualifications while working in financial services and often good opportunities for promotion.

How can you get into this type of work?

Your Personal Adviser will be able to discuss your options with you.

  • School or college - study for GCSEs, AS / A levels, a diploma, NVQs or other vocational qualifications that could lead to a job, an Apprenticeship, further qualifications or even a degree.

  • e2e (Entry to Employment) - if you’re not sure if you’re suited to this job you might be able to get some work experience through e2e. It can also give you extra support to gain the right qualifications, get onto a training programme or get a job.

  • Apprenticeship - train ‘on-the-job’ with a wage or allowance. For the latest Apprenticeship vacancies in Nottinghamshire go to Vacancies Online.

  • Work or work with training

What else can I do?

As well as qualifications, employers also look for the skills
people have when they’re applying for jobs. Here are the
skills that most employers are looking for from you
:

  • Team work

  • Customer service

  • Number skills

  • Communication

  • Information and communication technology (ICT)

  • Leadership

  • Project management

What’s happening in the industry?

Although this sector had been growing slowly, an economic downturn can affect jobs and salaries in financial services badly. Companies change, develop and expand all the time because of competition and this includes what is happening in the rest of the world

As with many sectors, some employers in financial services, accountancy and finance have been affected by the current economic climate. While there are problems at the moment, these industries are and will continue to be important to the UK economy. There will still be a range of opportunities at various levels for skilled people.

A university degree is becoming more popular for entry level jobs to much of the sector and graduate schemes are very competitive. More people are qualified to level 3 than in other industries.*

Many companies are updating their technology and systems and advances in technology mean that some jobs that were done by people are now being done by machines. This also means that people with specialist IT skills are in greater demand.

There is a shortage of people with communication skills, project management skills, leadership skills and knowledge of IT systems. More people with language skills may be needed too as companies develop relationships with other countries.

Because people are living longer and need to make sure they are comfortable in later life, there will be more demand for pensions, retirement planning and healthcare insurance and this means more jobs for people selling them.  Some of these jobs will be adviser positions and some will be jobs in call centres.

See the 'Notts Info' section for what's happening locally.

*ONS Labour Force Survey 2007

Over 100,000 people in Nottinghamshire are employed in banking, finance and insurance with over half of those people working in the Nottingham area.  There are slightly more women working in this sector than men and the majority of jobs are full time. (1)

The skills most in demand are customer handling, ICT and communication.

Most banks and building societies are represented in the high streets across Nottinghamshire. There are also independent businesses offering financial services such as insurance and accountancy. Many organisations have their own finance or accounts department, for example local councils, the NHS, universities and colleges.

There are some large national companies and organisations based in Nottingham, including:

Inland Revenue

Capital One

Experian

KPMG

Coutts

Tenon

Ikano Financial Services

HSBC

HBoS

Domestic and General Insurance

Churchills Insurance
