Leisure, sport and tourism... in detail

Leisure Centre Worker
What does it involve?
Working in leisure, sport and tourism often means working when other people are enjoying their time off. This can mean working shifts and holidays.  Places you might work include a leisure centre, travel agent, holiday centre or casino.

A lot of the jobs involve working with the public which means you need good customer care skills and are confident in dealing with complaints.  However, you may get perks such as cheap or free travel and other discounts; there's also a chance you could be doing something you really love!

What's happening in the industry?
There are lots of opportunities for young people in leisure, sport and tourism but there is a shortage of people with the right skills, especially management and leadership.

The leisure industry is growing but can be affected in a big way by national or world events.  For example, terrorist threats can put people off travelling to other countries and if a country's economy is struggling, people won't spend as much on leisure activities.  On the other hand, events such as the Foot and Mouth outbreak which seriously affected many farmers mean that more of them are now turning to tourism to make their living.

Sport is a rapidly growing area at the moment.  We're always hearing on the news about the need for people to get fit and lose weight and as more people take this on board, they'll be demanding more opportunities to play sport or seeking advice on getting fit.  And don't forget the 2012 Olympic Games which are to be held in London!  Not only will they encourage lots of us to get moving or watch sport, they'll create lots of jobs in other areas too.

Travel abroad is also becoming cheaper due to low cost airlines so not only will tourism increase in this country, there will be lots of opportunities to work in the travel industry in other countries too.
