What does it involve?

Advertising is a very competitive area of work with most of the top jobs going to graduates although there are some positions if you have A levels. It's about persuading people to buy products or do certain things like visit an event and sometimes, it's used just to inform people about something.  Different ways of advertising include through the media, such as television, radio or newspapers, posters, the Internet, by post or in places such as on buses.

Many advertising jobs are with advertising agencies and most of these are based in London.  Staff need to work quickly, usually in teams, and use creativity to produce something that their client is happy with and the job can involve lots of pressure and working long hours.

Jobs include account executives, copywriters (people who write the advert), designers and photographers.

All industries have marketing managers. Their job is to make sure that customers get what they want and to work how much of a product needs to be made. Daily tasks include checking out the competition, studying market trends and deciding on target audiences.  The job is usually based in an office, although can involve travel, and, like advertising, can be competitive.

What’s happening in the industry?

As well as advertising through the usual media such as television or magazines, more people are advertising using new technologies. A growth in digital and social media means that the advertising industry needs to find the best way of getting their message across in a wide variety of ways. This also means there are new jobs available, such as social media strategist, which require new skills.

Many companies and organisations employ marketing and advertising people as and when they need them which means that more and more people in this sector are freelancers or consultants.

There are strict advertising rules and these can change due to government strategies.  For example, in the UK we're no longer able to advertise cigarettes, and alcohol advertising is restricted.

See the 'Notts Info' section for what's happening locally.

Most advertising jobs are based in London and the South-East but over 700 people work in advertising companies in Nottinghamshire with most people working in Nottingham City and Rushcliffe district. There will be other job opportunities on offer within many other companies and organisations - look out for communications and marketing posts - as well as retailers.

Some people will also work freelance which means that they don't work for a particular company but offer their services where needed. Many of these people will be designers.

The majority of market research jobs are based in Nottingham City.
