County map
Nottinghamshire is in the East Midlands and borders South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire.

The districts of Nottinghamshire are Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Broxtowe, Gedling, Mansfield, Newark and Sherwood and Rushcliffe.

If you see the term Greater Nottingham (the conurbation), it refers to the City of Nottingham, the districts of Broxtowe, Gedling, and Rushcliffe, and the Hucknall area of Ashfield district.

Use the tabs above to select the area you're interested in.

In the past:

Nottinghamshire used to have lots of coal mining, textile and manufacturing industries and these work areas often employed people who had few or no qualifications. Now there aren't many jobs for people who don't have qualifications.

Now...

The county has seen a growth in service and knowledge-based industries including banking, ICT, finance, bioscience, creative, engineering and aerospace. This means we need a highly skilled and qualified workforce.

What types of jobs do we have in the county?

We have lots of different types of jobs spread across the county but some areas have higher concentrations of jobs from a particular sector. For example:

Type of work  District
Food and drink production  Bassetlaw
Textile manufacturing  Ashfield
Science  Nottingham City
Finance  Nottingham City
Tourism  Newark and Sherwood
ICT and communications  Mansfield and Nottingham City
Retail and distribution   Bassetlaw
Engineering manufacture  Ashfield
Education  Nottingham City

There are more jobs to choose from in Nottingham city.

Why? Good transport links and access to a large workforce mean that lots of large national and international businesses have offices in or around Nottingham. Nottingham has government departments along with the City and County councils. There are schools, colleges, two universities, hospitals and health centres, and lots of retail and leisure facilities.

Ashfield is located in the north-west of Nottinghamshire just 11 miles north of Nottingham City. The area has excellent transport links and is close to junctions 27 and 28 of the M1. The Robin Hood train line runs north-south with three stations in Ashfield connecting to Nottingham City and Worksop. The train also links to the Nottingham Tram (NET) system at Hucknall.

Many people living in Ashfield work in Mansfield or Nottingham where there are more job opportunities.  Ashfield is linked to these places by bus and train services.

Bassetlaw is in North Nottinghamshire within easy reach of both Sheffield and Doncaster and it’s about 30 miles north of Nottingham. The M1, the A1 and the East Coast Mainline all pass through Bassetlaw which mean good links with London, the South East and the North.  Robin Hood Airport is just over the border in the Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

The future
A new six-screen cinema complex and revamped market place is due to be completed in Worksop in March 2012. Transport, distribution and logistics, retail, low tech manufacturing and food production are likely to continue to be important employment sectors. The health and social care sector will grow due to the ageing population within the area.

Mansfield is an historic market town with a population of 98,000, however, many more people travel to work there. It has good transport links to nearby towns and the M1 and is 20 miles from Nottingham.

Mansfield's business base is growing, partly due to a large amount of modern business premises and partly due to the fact that it has good transport links. The Mansfield and Ashfield Regeneration Route (MARR), which links Chesterfield Road to Southwell Road, was built partly to attract new companies to the areas alongside it.

Technology and lCT jobs within the area are growing and the construction sector is stronger than in other parts of the country.

In Mansfield town centre a new bus station linked to the train station is expected to be built creating a transport interchange.

Newark and Sherwood District is in the east of the county.  Both the A1 and the East Coast railway line pass through Newark giving the area good links to London, the southeast and the North.  It’s the largest district in Nottinghamshire but only has 10% of the population.

Newark is the largest urban area in this district and is an historic town attracting visitors from the local area and further afield.

Nottingham is a large city with a population of around 286,000 with 750,000 people living in the Greater Nottingham area. Around 20% of the population are in their 20s compared with 15% nationally. It has good transport links to the rest of the UK and has a reputation for attracting national and international businesses. It's one of six Science Cities and hopes to create many science-based jobs over the next few years. Nottingham is also a popular place for shopping.

In the future we can expect to see these sectors grow:

  • creative

  • bioscience

  • health and social care

  • green technology

  • sport and leisure

but there will still be jobs in other sectors.

Nottingham Science City is hoping to create more jobs in the science, engineering and technology sector over the next ten years. The science sector includes the research, development and testing of new ideas in healthcare, environment, engineering, food and drink.  Nottingham Science Park in Lenton is home to several green technology companies.

There are some large redevelopment projects in and around the city which should create lots of opportunities in a range of work sectors:

Eastside (near the BBC and NHS direct)

There are plans for modern offices, retail, housing and leisure developments, with a water park connected to the regenerated canal quarter. The high-tech offices which are already there - including financial services, bio-technology and media - will be extended. Around 5,000 new jobs could be created.

Southside (from the Broadmarsh centre to the area around the train station)

A new transport hub, including the development of the railway station, will bring many more people to the area. New offices, shops and homes will be created. The city centre will spread southwards with the redevelopment of the Broadmarsh shopping centre. Recent developments include a new hotel, apartments, restaurants and bars.
