An introduction to Nottinghamshire

map

Nottinghamshire is in the East Midlands and borders South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire.

The districts of Nottinghamshire are Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Broxtowe, Gedling, Mansfield, Newark and Sherwood and Rushcliffe.

Greater Nottingham (the conurbation) includes the City of Nottingham, the districts of Broxtowe, Gedling, and Rushcliffe,

and the Hucknall area of Ashfield district.

Then...

Nottinghamshire used to have lots of coal mining, textile and manufacturing industries and these work areas often employed people who had few or no qualifications. Now there aren't many jobs for people who don't have qualifications.

Now...

The county has seen a growth in service and knowledge-based industries including banking, ICT, finance, bioscience, creative, engineering and aerospace. This means needing a highly skilled and qualified workforce.

The following tables show some of the types of jobs across Nottinghamshire and the number of people who work in those areas*:

What does this information tell us?

Most of the jobs are in Nottingham city.

Why? Good transport links and access to a large workforce mean that lots of large national and international businesses have offices in or around Nottingham. Nottingham has government departments along with the City and County councils. There are schools, colleges, two universities, hospitals and health centres, and lots of retail and leisure facilities.

There are a high number of tourism related jobs in Newark and Sherwood compared to other areas outside Nottingham.

Why? There are major attractions like Centerparcs, Rufford and Clumber park, historic sites in Newark town like the castle, and antique fairs which attract visitors.

Ashfield and Bassetlaw have a relatively high number of manufacturing jobs.

Why? There are several new business parks in these areas with good transport links to the rest of the UK. There are still engineering businesses in Ashfield making high specification products for the car and aerospace industries and engineering and food manufacturing companies in Bassetlaw.
