Factory Worker
As well as different jobs, the ways in which we work are changing too...

Flexible working
Many employers now want ‘flexible working’.  This might mean:

  • Temporary or fixed-term contracts (employers take more people on at busier times to save on costs).
  • ‘Hot desking’ (not having your own desk but sharing, in turn, with others)
  • Working from home (made easier by new technologies)
  • Shift work. People who work in factories, hospitals or hotels often work shifts as they are needed through the night or early in the morning.  More young people today are working shifts*.

For a lot of people flexible working is good news - it means that they can manage child-care and other commitments better.

Self employment
Have you ever thought about working for yourself in the future? Lots of young people have said that they’re interested in setting up their own business and self-employment is really growing.  You can work for yourself in lots of careers - for example, construction, hair and beauty, finance, hotels and catering. Or you might just have a brilliant idea you want to sell!

Full time or part time?
And finally, will you work full-time or part-time? The number of people choosing to work part-time is growing. People may choose to work part-time because full-time work isn’t available or because they want more time to spend with their family or on hobbies. Lots of young people have part-time jobs while they’re studying to earn some extra money.
