Why do jobs change?

Rounded corner
Construction Worker
There are many reasons why the types of jobs available to you in the future might change:

  • The products and services that people want to buy changes.
  • Companies move their production plants to other countries because labour is cheaper.
  • Machines or computers now do many jobs that used to be done by people.  This means that employers are looking for people with a higher level of skill than before.
  • People are living longer and this means that there are more jobs for people in health and social care.
  • Changes in Government policy such as education or health care affects why we do certain jobs.

Think about it ...

It costs a company less money to produce your trainers in China than it does in the UK – and that’s why there are fewer jobs in the textiles industry.

Free childcare places for the under 5s means that more childcare assistants are needed.

Cars these days have more electronic parts  - and that means there’s greater demand for highly skilled auto-electricians.

More people are wanting to eat fast food – and that means more jobs for fast food assistants and caterers!
